Short answer: “wild” and “extra virgin” describe two different things. Wild tells you where the olives come from: trees that grow on their own on mountain slopes, not in an orchard. Extra virgin is a quality grade: oil pressed mechanically, with no heat or chemicals, that meets strict chemical and taste limits. In Pakistan, wild olive oil (jangli zaitoon ka tel) is darker and stronger; cultivated extra virgin olive oil is lighter and smoother.

What is wild olive oil?

Wild olive oil is pressed from the fruit of wild olive trees. In Pakistan these grow naturally across the hills of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; botanists call the local wild olive Olea ferruginea, and most people simply call it jangli zaitoon. Nobody plants or waters these trees. The fruit is small, with a large stone and little flesh, so it takes a lot of hand-picked olives to fill one bottle.

Our Green Diamond is pressed from wild olives that grow on the mountain slopes of Zhob, Balochistan. It is cold-extracted and unrefined. In October 2026 a sample tested by the Balochistan Food Authority laboratory conformed to Pakistan Standards for extra virgin olive oil (free acidity 0.75%), so Green Diamond is both wild and extra virgin. See the lab report.

What is extra virgin olive oil?

Extra virgin is the top grade set by the International Olive Council. The oil must be extracted by mechanical means only, have free acidity of 0.8% or less, and show no taste defects. It says nothing about whether the trees were wild or planted. Most extra virgin olive oil in the world comes from cultivated orchards.

Our Golden Legacy is extra virgin olive oil pressed from cultivated olives grown in Loralai, Balochistan, and tested at a laboratory in Quetta.

Wild olive oil vs extra virgin olive oil at a glance

Wild olive oil (Green Diamond) Extra virgin olive oil (Golden Legacy)
Source Wild trees on the slopes of Zhob Cultivated orchards in Loralai
Fruit Small, big stone, little flesh Larger, fleshier olives
Colour Deep green, almost black Light gold
Taste Strong, earthy, more bitter and peppery Smooth, gently fruity, soft peppery finish
Best use Raw: over daal, salads, bread, as a finishing drizzle Everyday: tarka, bhunai, eggs, salads, paratha
Price (500 ml, October 2026) Rs 3,000 Rs 2,800

Why is wild olive oil darker and more expensive?

The colour comes from the wild fruit itself, and it changes from harvest to harvest. Colour is not a sign of quality on its own; tasters even use blue glasses so colour cannot bias them. Wild olive oil costs more because the trees are scattered across steep hills, the fruit is picked by hand and each small olive gives very little oil.

Which one should you buy?

  • For everyday Pakistani cooking: a smooth extra virgin olive oil such as Golden Legacy. See cooking Pakistani food with olive oil.
  • For a bold raw flavour: wild olive oil such as Green Diamond, a spoon over hot daal or chana chaat just before serving.
  • Not sure? Start with a 500 ml bottle of each and taste them side by side. See all olive oil prices in Pakistan.

Whichever you choose, check the label, the price per litre and the batch lab report. Our guide on how to check if olive oil is pure shows how.

Questions people ask

Is wild olive oil extra virgin?

It can be, but the two words mean different things. “Wild” describes the trees; “extra virgin” is a grade that depends on how the oil is made and on lab and taste tests.

Which is better for cooking, wild or extra virgin olive oil?

For daily cooking a smooth extra virgin olive oil is easier to use. Wild olive oil has a strong taste that shows best when it is used raw, as a finishing drizzle.

Al-Maharah sells Green Diamond wild olive oil from Zhob, Balochistan, in 500 ml, 750 ml and 1 litre bottles, with delivery across Pakistan and cash on delivery.
