How to store olive oil at home
A simple kitchen routine: protect the bottle from heat and light, close it after use and follow its label.
Keep olive oil in a cool, dark place away from the cooker and direct sunlight, and close the bottle after use. The International Olive Council identifies heat, air and light among the conditions to manage when storing olive oil.
Choose a place before opening the bottle
A cupboard away from heat sources is a practical starting point. Avoid leaving the bottle on a sunny windowsill or beside a working hob. The most convenient spot for pouring may not be the best place for long-term storage.
Make closing the bottle a habit
Return the cap after serving and keep the outside of the bottle clean. Follow the packaging instructions rather than leaving a bottle permanently open for convenience.
Read the dates and instructions
Check the dates and storage information printed on the actual bottle. Do not treat a generic internet shelf-life estimate as a replacement for those instructions. If a date is missing or difficult to read, ask the seller rather than guessing.
Buy a size that fits your routine
Before your next order, notice how often your household uses olive oil. A larger bottle may have an attractive unit price, but your decision should also reflect your storage space, budget and rate of use.
A checklist for your next purchase
- Do I have a suitable storage place?
- Can I read the bottle’s date and instructions?
- Does this size suit my household?
- Do I know who to contact with a packaging question?
For our collection, check the available Al-Maharah sizes and read the selected product’s information before ordering. If you need clarification about a bottle you received, contact Al-Maharah with its product and batch details.
